Ltd, a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Group, and Guangdong Institute of Intelligent Unmanned Systems signed a procurement contract for the construction of an integrated marine scientific research vessel in Nansha on March 20, with a contract value of RMB 341 million. The vessel has a maximum operational displacement of over 10,000 tons and will become the largest and most powerful integrated marine scientific research vessel in China after completion.

Li Shuo, Vice President of Guangdong Institute of Intelligent Unmanned Systems, and Zhou Xuhui, Vice General Manager of Guangzhou Shipbuilding International, signed the construction contract on behalf of both parties. Tan Hong, Chief Economist of Guangzhou Municipal Development and Reform Commission, Lin Yiwen, Deputy Director of Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology, Xie Ming, Standing Committee Member and Executive Vice Mayor of Nansha District, Yu Haibin, President of Guangdong Institute of Intelligent Unmanned Systems, Xie Changlong, Vice President of Guangzhou Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yang Li, Deputy Director of Ship and Sea Department of China Shipbuilding Group, Chen Zhongqian, Secretary of Party Committee and Chairman of Guangzhou Shipbuilding International, Li Xiaoping, Deputy Director of 708 Institute of China Shipbuilding Group, and Liang Feng, General Manager of China Classification Society Mr. Liang Feng, General Manager of Guangzhou Branch, witnessed the signing. The ceremony was hosted by Chen Qi, General Manager of CSIC.

The Guangdong Institute of Intelligent Unmanned Systems comprehensive research vessel is designed by the 708 Institute of China Shipbuilding, with comprehensive marine scientific research capability and a maximum operational displacement of over 10,000 tons, which will become the largest and most powerful marine comprehensive scientific research vessel in China after completion.

The research vessel has an overall length of 117.2m, a beam of 21m, a depth of 9m, a design draft of 5.4m, a design displacement of 7,920 tonnes, a maximum operational displacement of 10,100 tonnes and a maximum research carrying capacity of over 600 tonnes. The vessel meets the requirements of Class B ice area strengthening and is fully electrically driven with DP2 class power positioning system and equipped with a 360° full view cockpit.

The vessel is equipped with comprehensive marine scientific research capability, with multi-beam, single-beam, temperature and salt depth instrument and bathymetry and other scientific research detection equipment and support operation equipment, which can achieve multidisciplinary marine scientific research functions. At the same time, the vessel also has space and interfaces for a number of scientific research equipment, with strong scientific research expansion capabilities, to meet the needs of China's future marine scientific research.

Established in July 2019, the Guangdong Institute of Intelligent Unmanned Systems (GIUS) is a provincial institution jointly established by the Shenyang Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government and the Guangzhou Nansha Development Zone Administrative Committee. The Institute is committed to carrying out research on basic science, high technology research, key component development, system integration and testing, application demonstration, results transfer and transformation, small batch trial production and industrialisation related to intelligent unmanned systems. It aims to face the national strategic needs, the frontier science and technology in the field of intelligent unmanned systems, combine with the scientific and technological layout and industrial development plan of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, gather domestic and international advantageous innovation resources, build a highland for the research and development of intelligent unmanned systems equipment and industrial development, build a highland for the convergence of intelligent unmanned systems talents, and become an internationally renowned new research and development and industrial incubation institution with outstanding scientific and technological leadership.

According to records, the refitting and overhaul of China's first generation scientific research vessel, the Xiangyang Hong 5, was completed by Guangzhou Shipyard, the predecessor of Guangzhou Shipbuilding International, under the personal instruction of Premier Zhou Enlai. The ship was the most advanced scientific research vessel in China at the time and made a significant contribution to China's scientific research career after it entered service.

In March 2017, GSI also built and delivered the first fully electric and silent propulsion research vessel "Jia Geng" for Xiamen University, which combines the performance of "clean, quiet, universal and green", and has reached the top level of the same type of research vessel in the world. The ship has reached the top level of its type in the world. Since its completion, the vessel has successfully completed a number of major scientific research projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and has become one of the main vessels for deep-sea scientific research in China.

In 2016, Wenchong Repair & Construction, a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Guangdong International, completed the renovation of the "Exploration One" manned submersible work mothership. The vessel was one of the "double mother ships" that provided support for the "Kampf", which helped the "Kampf" manned submersible to set a new record of 10,909 meters. It provided important support for the Kampf to set a new record of 10,909m.

The comprehensive research vessel of Guangdong Institute of Intelligent and Unmanned Systems (GIUS), which was built by CSIC, will be another masterpiece of CSIC in the spirit of "daring to be the first and pursuing excellence", and will promote the development of China's marine research industry and speed up the construction of China's ocean power.
