Lack of ships, lack of cabinets, the unprecedented boom in the container shipping market so that shipping giants began to run into the field. In the face of the unprecedented boom in the shipping market, Taiwan Evergreen Marine finally took the plunge to order 20 15000TEU large container ships in four shipyards in China, Japan and South Korea. Together with the latest order, Evergreen Marine will be among the world's fourth largest container ship shipping company.

According to trade wind news, Evergreen Marine in China, Japan and South Korea on the four shipyards to order shipbuilding, four shipyards including Hudong-Zhonghua, Jiangnan Shipbuilding, South Korea Samsung Heavy Industries and Japan Imabari shipbuilding. Among them, Imabari Shipbuilding will build 10 ships, Samsung Heavy Industries will build 5 ships, and Hudong-Zhonghua and Jiangnan Shipbuilding will jointly build the remaining 5 ships. The new ships will be operated with conventional fuel and installed with desulfurization devices, each costing about $115 million, with a total order amount of $2.3 billion (about RMB 14.890 billion).

According to industry sources, the 10 new vessels of Imabari Shipbuilding will be ordered by its subsidiary Zhengrong Steamship as the ship owner and will be leased to Evergreen Marine for a long time after delivery. The other 10 ships built by the Chinese and Korean shipbuilders will be ordered directly by Evergreen Marine or its subsidiaries.

It is understood that these four shipyards have a long-term cooperation relationship with Evergreen Marine. Evergreen Marine had ordered the first 11 20,000 TEU container ships from Imabari Shipbuilding in 2015. 20 orders for 11,000 TEU container ships ordered by Evergreen Marine in 2018 were also received by Samsung Heavy Industries and Imabari Shipbuilding, of which 8 were built by Samsung Heavy Industries and 12 by Imabari Shipbuilding.

In addition, Evergreen Marine placed its first order at a mainland shipyard in 2018, choosing Jiangnan Shipbuilding to sign a contract for the construction of four 2,500 TEU containerships. 2019, Hudong-Zhonghua, Jiangnan Shipbuilding and Samsung Heavy Industries shared a large order for 10 23,000 TEU containerships for Evergreen Marine, of which six were built by Samsung Heavy Industries and two each by Hudong-Zhonghua and Jiangnan Shipbuilding.

It is understood that Evergreen Marine initially in the second half of last year to order the news of 15000TEU container ship, when the U.S. line continued to soar record high prices, and 15000TEU container ship is the U.S. line "main" ship type. At that time, there was news that Evergreen Marine contacted Hudong-Zhonghua, Jiangnan Shipbuilding, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, as well as Japan's Imabari Shipbuilding and South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries for the order.

In addition to the high price, the industry also pointed out that the container companies are currently operating 13000TEU to 15000TEU container ships are mostly built more than 10 years ago, fuel efficiency is not high, and the existing ship prices are at a low point. According to the international ship network understanding, between 2008 and 2009, the Korean shipping companies 13000TEU container ship cost more than 130 million U.S. dollars each, and now Evergreen Marine's order presumed to cost only 115 million U.S. dollars.

At the same time, in the past year, Evergreen Marine's performance also hit a new high, the cumulative annual revenue reached NTD 207.28 billion (about RMB 47.820 billion), which is also one of the important factors that prompted Evergreen Marine to "bottom out" the ship order.

According to Alphaliner's data, Evergreen Marine currently has a fleet of 197 vessels with a total capacity of 1.28 million TEU, ranking 7th in the world. In addition, Evergreen Marine has 62 new ships under construction, with a total capacity of 467,800 TEU, which is the company with the most orders among the top ten shipping giants.

If the latest 20-ship order is finalized, Evergreen Marine's total capacity will increase by another 300,000 TEU to nearly 2.05 million TEU, surpassing ONE (about 1.775 million TEU), which currently ranks 6th, and Hapag-Lloyd (about 1.884 million TEU), which ranks 5th.
