Wanhai Shipping (Singapore) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Wanhai Shipping, announced that it plans to purchase four 6,000TEU LNG dual-fuel reserved container ships from Huangpu Wenchong and two 9,200TEU methanol dual-fuel reserved container ships from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding.
Among them, the average price of each of Huangpu Wenchong's four 6,000TEU ships is US$75.2-82 million (approximately RMB 520-567 million), and the total transaction amount is US$3008-328 million (approximately RMB 2.079-2.267 billion). ); the average price of each of Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding's two 9200TEU ships is US$102-112 million (approximately RMB 705-774 million), and the total transaction amount is US$204-224 million (approximately RMB 1.410-1.548 billion). The ship price includes the amount of ship upgrade equipment.
For reference, Clarkson's data shows that the current newbuilding price of a 5500/6000TEU wide-body container ship is about US$79.5 million, slightly lower than the US$80 million in the same period last year; the newbuilding price of an 8500/9500TEU container ship is about US$105 million, higher than the US$104.5 million in the same period last year.
This is Wanhai Shipping’s second collaboration with a shipyard under China State Shipbuilding Corporation in the short term after signing a construction contract for six 6,000TEU container ships with Huangpu Wenchong in February this year. Including the latest orders, Wanhai Shipping currently has 10 6,000TEU container ships ordered at Huangpu Wenchong, and 2 9,200TEU ships and 1 7,000TEU ship ordered at Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding.
It is understood that the 6,000TEU container ship ordered by Wanhai Shipping in Huangpu Wenchong was developed and designed by the Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI). This type of ship has a total length of 255 meters, a width of 40 meters, and a deadweight of approximately 76,500 tons. It has advanced design and excellent performance. It fully meets the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III emission standards and the latest environmental protection regulations of the third phase of the Ship Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), embodying the advanced green and low-carbon design concept.
Wan Hai Lines, Evergreen Marine Lines and Yang Ming Marine Lines are listed as the "Three Container Heroes" in Taiwan. Unlike the other two companies, Wanhai Shipping mainly focuses on inter-Asian routes, but in recent years it has also gradually opened up ocean routes. Wanhai Shipping will return to the container ship newbuilding market in 2024, and has successively signed contracts with HD Hyundai Samho to build four 8,700TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships and four 16,000TEU methanol reserved ships. In addition, it has also signed a contract with Samsung Heavy Industries to build four 16,000TEU container ships.
At the beginning of 2025, Wanhai Shipping officially signed a large order for 12+4 8700TEU container ships with Taiwan Shipbuilding. In June last year, Wan Hai Shipping also acquired two 7,000TEU container ship resale ships ordered by China United Shipping from Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding in February 2022. Among them, the first ship "Erchun (WAN HAI 711)" was just delivered for operation in February this year.
