The latest global shipbuilding industry monthly report is released, with 193 ships reaching a new high!

The number of newly signed orders decreased by 123 ships month-on-month, with Chinese shipbuilding companies receiving the most orders and South Korea ranking second.


According to Clarkson’s latest statistics (as of February 9, 2026), 193 new orders were signed globally in January 2026, totaling 6,382,801CGT. Compared with the global new orders of 316 ships in December 2025, totaling 8,996,938 CGT, the number decreased by 123 ships month-on-month, and the revised gross tonnage decreased by 29.06% month-on-month. Compared with the 400 new orders signed globally in January 2025, totaling 4,752,170 CGT, the number decreased by 207 units year-on-year. However, thanks to the surge in orders for liquefied gas ships, the revised gross tonnage increased by 34.31% year-on-year.


In terms of ship type, there are 12 bulk carriers with a total deadweight of 1,343,000; 36 oil tankers with a total of 8,219,800 deadweight; 14 chemical tankers with a total of 428,700 deadweight; and 40 container ships. ships, totaling 304,492 TEU; 41 liquefied gas ships, totaling 5,016,000 cubic meters; 27 other ship types, totaling 652,060CGT; 23 offshore engineering ships, totaling 148,874CGT.


In terms of order types, 4 Capesize bulk carriers, 2 Panamax bulk carriers, and 6 Handymax bulk carriers were newly signed for bulk carriers; 19 VLCCs, 11 Suezmax tankers, and 6 Aframax tankers were newly signed for oil tankers; 12 post-Panamax container ships, 15 Panamax container ships, 2 sub-Panamax container ships, and 11 Handysize container ships were newly signed for container ships.


Looking at the countries receiving orders, there were 193 global new ship orders in January, totaling 6,382,801 CGT. Among them, Chinese shipyards received 123 ships, totaling 4,330,604 CGT; Japanese shipyards received 3 ships, totaling 38,714 CGT; Korean shipyards received 29 ships, totaling 1,387,784 CGT. The revised gross tonnage accounted for 67.85%, 0.61% and 21.74% of global new ship orders respectively.


According to statistics, as of February 9, 2026, global shipyards have orders for 6,688 ships, totaling 180,348,573 CGT. Compared with the 6,586 ships counted on January 9, 2026, totaling 175,281,928 CGT, the number of orders on hand increased by 1.55% month-on-month, and the revised gross tonnage increased by 2.89% month-on-month.


Among them, Chinese shipyards have 4,506 orders on hand, totaling 113,431,823 CGT, accounting for 67.37% of the global market share, and CGT 62.90%; Japanese shipyards have 747 orders on hand, totaling 12,999,87 3CGT, the number of ships accounts for 11.17% of the global market share, and CGT accounts for 7.21%; Korean shipyards have 718 orders on hand, totaling 36,228,440 CGT, the number of ships accounts for 10.74% of the global market share, and CGT accounts for 20.09%. 


Judging from the main ship types, the number of orders on hand for bulk carriers is 1,490 ships, totaling 131,578,743 deadweight tons; the number of order books on hand for oil tankers is 1,590 ships, totaling 131,467,115 deadweight tons; and the number of order books on hand for container ships is 1,289 ships, totaling 11,460,485TEU.
