On January 13, COSCO Shipping Holdings Co., Ltd. announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary COSCO Asset Management Co., Ltd. signed a construction contract for 12 18,000TEU LNG dual-fuel powered container ships with Jiangnan Shipbuilding and CSSC Trading. The contract cost of each ship is RMB 1.399 billion. The total transaction price is RMB 16.788 billion, paid in RMB.
This cooperation is not only an important measure for the two major central enterprises to deepen strategic coordination and implement major national development strategies, but also a milestone for China's shipbuilding industry and shipping industry to jointly move towards green, intelligent and high-quality development, contributing Chinese solutions and Chinese strength to the low-carbon transformation of the global shipping industry.
This batch of new ships is the flagship ship type built by COSCO Shipping Holdings to increase the scale of its fleet capacity, achieve balanced global development, and further consolidate its position in the industry. The new ship is expected to be delivered between 2028 and 2029. After delivery, it is planned to be put into operation on the east-west trunk route to improve the service quality of relevant routes and optimize the cost structure of relevant routes, thereby further enhancing the company's core competitiveness in the traditional trunk market.
This type of ship is the "Kun" (KUN-18N) ship type independently developed and designed by Jiangnan Shipbuilding. It uses LNG as the main fuel and has completely independent intellectual property rights. All performance indicators have reached the domestic advanced level, and it has the advantages of high efficiency, energy saving, green and environmental protection, and meets the ship owner's strategy and plan to reduce carbon emissions of the fleet in the subsequent operating cycle.
