On June 18, COSCO Shipping, CITIC Jinlei and Fujian Shipbuilding held a signing ceremony for the construction and leasing contract of 30 80,000-ton multi-purpose grain ships in Fuzhou. Chen Wei, Party Secretary and Chairman of COSCO Shipping, Shi Fu'an, Deputy General Manager, Li Gang, Party Secretary and Chairman of CITIC Jinzuo, Zhao Jinjie, Party Secretary and Chairman of Fuchuan Group, Huang Rutang, Deputy General Manager, and relevant leaders of CITIC Bank Fuzhou Branch attended and witnessed the signing of the contract. Pan Siwei, general manager of COSCO Shipping Strategy and Enterprise Management Department, and Wang Kun, general manager of CITIC Jinlead Shipping Business Department, signed a long-term ship leasing contract on behalf of both parties.
COSCO Shipping pointed out that this cooperation is an important measure for COSCO Shipping to continuously promote the optimization of the company's fleet structure, build a fleet of major powers, and support "national shipbuilding" based on Fujian Shipping's technical, cost and service advantages in the field of ship manufacturing, and CITIC Jinluo's strong innovation capabilities in the financial field. It is conducive to accelerating the supplementary high-quality grain transportation capacity, enhancing the global competitiveness of the company's fleet, and improving the national important material transportation capacity.
This type of ship greatly improves the cargo compliant suitability of the cargo hold by optimizing the ship's model design. In addition to meeting the loading requirements of grain, it is also suitable for shipping containers, groceries, engineering equipment, ordinary dry bulk cargoes and other kinds of cargoes. It will become an important driving force for COSCO Shipping to expand its business territory and create a second growth curve, further enhancing the company's core competitiveness in the fleet.
According to foreign media reports, the 30 new ships will be built by Mawei Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Fujian Shipbuilding Administration. Among them, 15 of the actual ships that have been confirmed to be built are scheduled to be delivered one after another between 2027 and 2028, and 15 are optional orders. Each new ship costs about US$50 million, with a total transaction amount of US$1.5 billion (approximately RMB 10.784 billion), and the lease period is estimated to exceed 12 years.
